Mercury is a naturally occurring metal found in the environment, but its introduction into the surroundings can be detrimental. In California, over the last decade, there have been over 60 cases of poisonings linked to undisclosed, unmarked, or homemade skin creams containing the harmful mercury, often labeled as mercurous chloride, calomel, or other names. It's crucial to steer clear of homemade or unlabeled creams and brand-name containers lacking proper seals upon purchase. Unsealed containers may have been tampered with and could contain mercury or other contaminants. These creams are frequently used to address issues like blemishes, freckles, imperfections, age spots, and to treat skin conditions such as acne. They are commonly distributed in local stores, flea markets, sold by individuals, or online. If there's no ingredient list provided, it's best to avoid using such products.

Many of these items are produced outside the United States and are imported. In previous cases of poisonings linked to imported skin creams, some unintended recipients, including children and infants, became seriously ill due to exposure to mercury in their homes or through contact with family members who used these products. Children and pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of mercury. Symptoms of mercury poisoning include tremors, memory difficulties, numbness and tingling, as well as changes in vision or hearing. So, exercise caution when selecting your preferred beauty products or experimenting with new brands.

These commonly used products contain ingredients such as talc, titanium dioxide, and polytetrafluoroethylene. Talc is a naturally occurring substance, but it should never be inhaled or ingested, as both of these routes can lead to harm, resulting in eye and lung irritation, chest pain, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, and even coma. Titanium dioxide, which serves as a UV filter, should not be present in your pressed or loose powders (although it poses a lower risk in lotions and creams). As for polytetrafluoroethylene, well, that's none other than Teflon, the substance that prevents your eggs from sticking to the pan. All things considered, maybe a little shine isn't such a terrible thing after all, given the potential risks associated with these products.

The Senorita Margarita flavor contains citral, which, despite being a natural ingredient derived from plant sources, can still lead to potentially severe allergic reactions. Symptoms of an allergic reaction to citral may include rashes, blisters, itchy skin, and swollen eyes and lips. It's crucial to realize that just because something is natural doesn't guarantee it is entirely safe or devoid of side effects. In fact, the opposite can often be true. Moreover, some lip glosses contain harmful substances like lead, cadmium, chromium, aluminum, and five other toxic metals.
